Steve Irwin = idiot
I haven't been on here in a while, but I would just like to express my sorrow for the nation of Australia's loss of Steve Irwin...Animal Planet is in mourning right now...
My question is, how do you get killed by a stingray? I mean, this thing is like 7 ft. across from what I hear, so you don't want to shampoo with it, right? What are everyone else's thoughts?

Where this happened off the coast of Australia I had read, the stingrays were unusually aggressive and were agitated because there were numerous tiger sharks swimming in the area as well. If they feel threatened, stingrays can whip their tails around with quite a lot of force and sting their attackers with the jagged barb on the end. Usually it's a painful but not a deadly wound. Less than 30 or so people a year die from a stingray attack. In Steve Irwin's case, he was just swimming too close above the stingray when it lashed out at him. Pulling the serrated barb out of his chest as he did guaranteed him a nearly instantaneous death.
And it was all caught on film.
